The textbook proposed for Mexican-American studies for Texas has come under criticism. Some of the criticisms of the book include lack of Mexican-American expert authors, and large sections that contain very little to do with Mexican-American history.
The biggest criticisms of the textbook seems to be language that suggest Mexicans are lazy. One section alludes to Mexican culture being inherently lazier than their American counterparts.
“Industrialists were very driven, competitive men who were always on the clock and continually concerned about efficiency. They were used to their workers putting in a full day’s work, quietly and obediently, and respecting rules, authority, and property. In contrast, Mexican laborers were not reared to put in a full day’s work so vigorously. There was a cultural attitude of ‘mañana,’ or ‘tomorrow,’ when it came to high-gear production.”
The Texas Board of education is currently reviewing the text book and it’s criticisms.
