There have been many conversations about the treatment of women versus men in the math and sciences lately. Rather it be the lack of women in certain fields or treatment of women students in majors, many people have begun to notice a gap between males and females in those areas… at least in terms of perceptions. However, it would appear that those perceptions kick in earlier than initially thought.
According to a recent study out of New York University and the University of Illinois, the teachers of first grade students often rate the math skills of girls below that of boys in spite of the fact that they have the same level of achievement.
FiveThirtyEight summed up the study:
“The study tapped into research following 7,507 children nationwide from kindergarten through first grade, starting in 2010. Teachers in the study were asked to rate their students on their math ability. The harsh ratings didn’t start right away. In kindergarten, girls and boys were rated about equally, when controlling for their scores on independent assessments, as well as their age, socioeconomic status and learning style. But in first grade, girls were rated lower, on average, across the achievement spectrum.”
This study echoes similar studies that have been done in the 2000s.
