Much has been of the inner city teacher shortage. Vacancies and open teaching positions have had many people worrying about the future of the profession. Those people got some good news today.
The Department of Education has announced that the number of new teachers receiving licenses from Indiana increased by a large margin. Last school year 3,843 licenses were issued, which was a 6-year low. 4,552 licenses were issued this year.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz saw the stat as a sign of improvement:
“Before I was elected, Hoosier teachers were under attack and it is clear that those attacks took their toll,” Ritz added. “Today’s numbers show that the first steps of healing have begun, but we have more work to do. I look forward to working with the Legislature and the next Governor to ensure that every Hoosier student has access to an excellent educator by systematically addressing the needs of the teaching profession.”
