Governor Mike Pence may be on his way to the White House, but his policy will live on through the new governor if Eric Holcomb has his way.
Eric Holcomb plans to expand pre-K education, and the private school voucher program. When talking to the Indiana School Board Association, Holcomb also said he wants to shorten Indiana’s testing system and make sure that curriculum matches up with the skills that Indiana employers need.
The pre-K program Indiana currently has is not compulsory, nor is it all inclusive. Holcomb has indicated that he wants to expand pre-k specifically for low income families. The federal government is offering money that would enable Indiana to expand its pre-k program and Mike Pence had previously indicated Indiana would seek that grant… after controversially passing on it before.
The Indiana school voucher program has been quite controversial. Questions about costs and effectiveness have dogged the program locally but the program has been praised nationally.
Indiana’s new testing system is still up in the air. After voting to end usage of the ISTEP, decision makers have still yet to decide what will replace it, although suggestions have been made.
