It is no secret test scores of US students have been falling relative to that of international students. There had been hopes that better standards and increased scrutiny would lead to better performance. However, the scores are out and there is little to no change.
US scores on the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) exams stagnated in some areas like reading and science but actually fell in math.
In what is becoming a common theme, East Asian countries performed the best. Canada and Finland received high scores as well.
Secretary of Education John King expressed his displeasure with the scores, commenting that “We’re losing ground.”
The lone bit of good news from the exams: The US received “high marks” for decreasing the relationship between socioeconomic status and performance.
