The confirmation hearing for President-Elect Trump’s Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos, is scheduled for 5 PM today. The Secretary of Education confirmation is not ordinarily especially eventful, but as with everything else in the Trump administration, this year’s confirmation hearing is shaping up to be a show.
Here are a few hot topic issues to watch for in the hearing:
1. Unapproved paperwork
As of 11:00 am today her paperwork has yet to be approved by the Office of Government Ethics.
2. Donations
DeVos has made many campaign and organization contributions. Expect democrats to make an issue of this especially if some of those organizations and candidates can be framed in a negative light.
3. Lack of policy stances
Critics of DeVos have pointed out that she really hasn’t taken a stand on lots of different issues such as higher education and LGBT issues.
4. Anti-Public School?
One area where DeVos has made her opinion known is in the Public vs Charter vs Private school arena. Her views have left many public school advocates worried. Expect a lot of probing around her push for vouchers and religious schooling.
5. Lack of experience
This can be said of quite a few people in the Trump administration, including Trump himself. However, expect it to still be raised as an issue.
How to watch:
The hearing will be streamed live on the committee website. C-SPAN and PBS NewsHour are also expected to cover the event.
