Betsy DeVos was just installed as the secretary of education by the senate on Tuesday. If one of her GOP colleagues has his way she won’t have a department to lead for long.
Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie has penned a bill that would abolish the Department of Education by December 31, 2018.
Such a gesture is in line with Trump’s original campaign promises. As far back as September Donald Trump was kicking around the idea of eliminating the Department of Education citing “waste” as his primary reason. Other presidents such as Reagan have promised to do the same in the past.
However, Massie’s bill is unlikely to be the one to make Trump’s original dream a reality. Departments as large as the Department of Education typically aren’t eliminated by one-line bills. Especially when said bill doesn’t specify what happens to the $68 billion that typically goes to that department.
